  • Prep Time: 10 Minutes
  • Set Time: 15 Minutes
  • Servings: 1 giant party bowl
  • Key Tool: Large cookie sheet and a wire cooling rack

⚠️ Crucial: Avoid the urge to add the M&M’s to the bowl before you pour the hot almond bark. If you mix them in early, the heat from the melted candy coating will melt the chocolate shells, making the colors bleed and turn into a muddy mess instead of bright holiday colors.

Ingredients

  • 8-10 cups plain lightly salted popped popcorn (about 1 microwave bag; or store-bought popped popcorn)
  • 2 cups mini pretzel twists (roughly broken into pieces)
  • ½ cup lightly salted roasted peanuts (optional)
  • ½ (24-oz) bar Vanilla Almond Bark (baking aisle — look for the bricks!)
  • 1 (10-oz) bag Red, White, and Blue M&M's
  • 3 tablespoons patriotic sprinkles (I like to use a mix of jimmies and star sprinkles)

Instructions

  • Prep:

Line a large cookie sheet with wax paper or aluminum foil. Get your ingredients ready.

  • Prep popcorn:

If you popped your own popcorn, dump it into a large mixing bowl and let it sit until it is completely cool to the touch.
To easily remove unpopped kernels, place a wire cooling rack flat over the top of the bowl. Flip the whole thing upside down over your sink and give it a good shake (do not drop that cooling rack!) Most of the heavy, un-popped kernels will fall right through the rack.

  • Add pretzels and peanuts:

Measure 1-½ cups of mini pretzels (roughly break them up) and add them to the bowl with the cooled popcorn, along with the peanuts.
Note: Do not add the M&M's yet! Pouring hot melted candy over M&M's makes the colored shells bleed and turn muddy.
1.5 cups mini pretzel twists, ½ cup lightly salted roasted peanuts

  • Melt the almond bark:

Break 6 squares of the vanilla almond bark (½ of a whole bar) into a microwave-safe glass bowl.

Microwave on high for 60 seconds, then give it a stir. Continue heating in short 15-second bursts, stirring each time until it is completely smooth and liquid.

No need to add any vegetable oil — almond bark is self-thinning and doesn't need it.

  • Toss:

Drizzle the smooth, melted bark evenly over the popcorn and pretzel mixture. I use two spoons or rubber spatulas to GENTLY toss from the bottom up (like a salad!) until everything has a glossy coating.

Immediately dump the mix out onto your prepared sheet pan and spread it into a single layer.

  • Make it pretty:

While the bark is still warm and sticky, scatter the remaining ½ cup broken pretzels, all of the M&M’s and your sprinkles evenly across the top so they lock into the candy coating.
0.5 cups mini pretzel twists, 1 (10-oz) bag Red, White, and Blue M&M's, 3 tablespoons patriotic sprinkles

  • Let it set:

Let the pan sit on the counter for 15 minutes until the coating snaps clean to the touch.

Notes

  • Ditch the artificial theater butter: Use a plain, air-popped, or lightly salted microwave popcorn for the base. Heavy artificial butter flavor does not mix well with the sweet vanilla coating.
  • Never use plastic bowls for melting: Melt your vanilla almond bark bricks in a microwave-safe glass or ceramic bowl. Plastic bowls retain moisture and heat unevenly, which can overheat the bark and cause it to seize up into an un-stirrable, chalky block.
  • The M&M “bleed” warning: Do not toss your colorful M&M’s into the bowl with the hot, melted candy coating. Wait until the mix is spread flat on your sheet pan, then scatter the chocolates across the top so they stay bright and beautiful without bleeding into the white bark.

🔥 Substitution & Ingredient Notes

Can I use white chocolate chips? Yes. If you can’t find vanilla almond bark bricks in the baking aisle, white chocolate chips work, but you might need to stir in a tiny spoonful of vegetable shortening to help them melt down smoothly.

What if I need to skip the peanuts? You can completely skip the roasted peanuts. Just add a little extra broken pretzel piece to keep that perfect salty crunch in the mix.

Budget Option: If you want to save a few dollars, grab a plain microwave popcorn bag instead of the pricey pre-popped store brands. Just make sure it isn’t heavy on the artificial theater butter flavor!

The Sprinkles: If you don’t have a patriotic star blend, a simple mix of red and blue jimmies from the baking aisle works perfectly to add that pop of holiday color.

The Magic Behind the Snack

The secret to getting that perfect, gourmet-style snack mix in a simple kitchen bowl comes down to catching unpopped kernels and timing your toppings.

Why we shake the bowl upside down:
Dump your cooled popcorn into a large bowl, place a wire cooling rack flat over the top, and flip the whole thing upside down over the sink for a quick shake. Most of those heavy, hard kernels will drop straight through the rack, reducing the risk of biting on an unpopped kernel!

The “Warm-Sticky” Window:
Do not wait for the almond bark to cool down before dressing up your sheet pan! Toss the popcorn and pretzels with the melted coating, spread it flat, and immediately scatter your M&M’s and sprinkles across the top while it is still wet and sticky. This acts like a glue, trapping the candies so they stay locked into the chunky clusters instead of sinking straight to the bottom of the bowl.

This smart sweet-and-salty trick is my favorite way to whip up a holiday treat without turning on the hot oven, much like in my Valentine’s Day Popcorn and my Easter Popcorn!

How to Serve Your Red White and Blue Popcorn

To turn this giant batch of snack mix into a holiday favorite your family will love, try these easy presentation ideas:

  • The Backyard Barbecue Bowl: Set the giant bowl right next to the hot dog station at your summer cookout for an easy grab-and-go snack while the mains are cooking.
  • The Drive-In Movie Night: Pack individual plastic cups full of the festive crunch for the kids to hold while watching the neighborhood fireworks from the back of the minivan.
  • The Poolside Snack Platter: Keep a tray of this sweet-and-salty mix under the shade of the patio umbrella for the kids to munch on between swim sessions on a hot summer afternoon.

💡FAQs

What if my almond bark feels too thick after microwaving?

Don’t panic! Vanilla almond bark is self-thinning, so it just needs a good stir with a metal spoon to smooth it out. If it still looks a little chunky, put it back in the microwave for a tiny 15-second burst, but don’t overdo it or the chocolate can burn and seize up.

Can I make this a few days ahead of time?

The popcorn taste best fresh, you can keep it in an airtight container for 1-2 days, but it will lose some of the crunch.

How do I handle the leftovers?

If your kids don’t polish off the entire bowl, keep the extra in a sealed container on your kitchen counter for up to 1-2 days. Do not put it in the fridge, because the humidity inside will make the popcorn go completely stale and soggy.
